Advocates have rights of audience to represent clients in all courts in Jersey. Jersey solicitors (also known as écrivains) have limited rights of audience.
Advocates and Jersey solicitors have a right to practise Jersey law pursuant to the Advocates and Solicitors (Jersey) Law 1997, as amended (the “1997 Law”). It is only lawyers qualified under the 1997 Law who are qualified and have a right to practise Jersey law. The Law Society of Jersey has published a briefing note which sets out the process for qualification as an advocate or a Jersey solicitor, a copy of which can be downloaded here.
Lawyers practising foreign law in Jersey (which includes the laws of the United Kingdom) are not regulated by the Law Society of Jersey.
