Locum Crown Counsel
St Helena, South Atlantic
6 months FTC commencing ASAP
£40k pa pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications, taxable in St Helena; a tax free International Supplement will also apply
Without the need for close supervision you will have conduct of most, and usually all, Government civil litigation.
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. With the opening of a new international airport last October there is now a weekly scheduled flight from Johannesburg.
You will advise upon all aspects of general common law in St Helena (mainly civil) and conduct litigation in civil and employment matters that includes drafting pleadings and all court documents and appearing in court where necessary. You must also advise all organs of government on contracts, procurement, leases and land, HR and employment matters along with occasional advice to the planning department. You will also support the procurement board where necessary.
Assisting with legislative drafting, you will advise members of the Legislative Council on actual or potential Council business, including bills, with respect to any queries or clarifications in areas pertinent to civil practice.
A UK or commonwealth qualified solicitor or barrister you must have substantial experience of civil litigation, in particular employment and medical negligence work. Having run your own caseload, you must have good communication skills, a flexible approach and strong analytical skills.
