HSBC CIIoM Legal Department, based in Jersey, is recruiting an additional Legal Counsel for its expanding legal team based in Jersey.  The role will primarily support our Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) business.

Role:                           Legal Counsel – Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB)

Qualification:               Practising lawyer. Admission in Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man an advantage.   

Experience:                 4 Years PQE, min. 2 years of banking experience.

HSBC CIIoM employs over 1200 staff and we are growing.  Our businesses serve a diverse local and international client base including personal and corporate banking, private banking and trust related business. The HSBC CIIoM Legal Department, which currently has 6 permanent lawyers, is responsible for providing first class, proactive legal advice.

The role we are now recruiting for will be at the 4 years PQE level. The role will be involved in advising on a wide spectrum of legal issues affecting our Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) business.

The successful candidate will be a proactive self-starter, have excellent academic credentials and first class legal experience in the retail banking sector. You will bring fun and energy to our lively team.

The CIIoM Legal team is integrated into the HSBC Global Legal Team. International career progression is encouraged.

Role Purpose and accountabilities

  • Provide support on a broad range of legal issues arising out of the CIIOM WPB business.
  • To be considered as a trusted adviser by ensuring that commercially sensitive and pragmatic legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner to the CIIOM WPB business.
  • Provide support and guidance to more senior lawyers in the CIIOM Legal Team and assist in identification of legal risks and appropriate risk mitigation strategies. Governance and Committee Memberships
  • The role holder will be expected to attend WPB formal governance meetings as a delegate for more senior WPB lawyer and as appropriate to attend other governance fora as the primary member. The role holder will therefore need to have sufficient professional experience and gravitas to do this successfully. Customers/Stakeholders
  • Proactively provide high quality specialised legal and related regulatory advice and guidance and support to the CIIOM WPB businesses. 
  • Assist in managing the relationships with panel law firms / external legal counsel and ensure such appointments deliver cost effective and practical advice. Leadership & Teamwork
  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with all members of the CIIOM Legal Team and other relevant legal teams including the UK Legal Team and the Global WPB Team headed by the General Counsel WPB.
  • Participate in the co-ordination and promotion of initiatives that result in the sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the Global Legal Function. Functional Knowledge and Experience
  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with 2-4 years of top quality banking experience.
  • Solid knowledge and experience of all aspects of retail banking and wealth and investment products. 
  • Experience of helping a retail wealth focussed business on designing and delivering wealth products. 
  • Ability to learn quickly about the HSBC Group’s business and personnel, policies and procedures, and corporate culture. 
  • Communication and inter-personal skills with the ability to adapt communication style and content to appropriately address the management level of the audience.
  • Lateral thinking/problem solving and the ability to understand the relationships between a range of complex issues and the impact of those issues from a legal, financial and reputational perspective to advise client and reach a solution.
