Judicial Assistant to the Master of the Royal Court
The Master of the Royal Court is the main procedural judge for civil cases brought in the Royal Court.
The role has been ably supported for a number of years by the Master’s Secretary who retires at the end of this month.
As part of the Royal Court’s progressive move to a more streamlined, digital way of working, we would like to work towards replacing the role of Master’s Secretary with a position similar to that of a Judicial Assistant in the High Court of England and Wales.
As a first step in developing that role we would like to appoint someone for a fixed term of up to 12 months or as a secondment from the legal profession. Applications are, however, welcomed from suitable candidates looking for a permanent position.
The Role
The role will require the applicant to assist the Master in terms of:
In addition, there will be an opportunity to work with, and assist, other members of the Judicial Greffe, including the Judicial Greffier, in relation to a variety of projects, including the Court’s digital transformation.
The role will offer someone in the early years of their professional practice a ringside view of the Royal Court, and its first instance decision-making from the perspective of the Master. It will also provide you with an unparalleled insight into how the Royal Court works and how it will evolve.
The Applicant
You will be a graduate with experience of working in a legal environment as a paralegal or a recently qualified barrister or solicitor at the start of your career.
You will need excellent organisational skills, the ability to work around problems, and to manage large and varied workloads, as well as a high level of professional integrity. You will be ICT literate (O365). Most importantly, you will have the mindset to cope with a role that is going to evolve and change over the contract or secondment term.
Applications
Applications are invited from prospective candidates and should include an up to date C.V. and covering letter detailing their salient experience and why they would be suited for the role.
Alternatively, firms who wish to discuss the potential for a member of their team to be seconded to the Court Service to fulfil this role are invited to contact the Master at d.cadin@courts.je.
Further information about the role can be obtained by contacting the Master at d.cadin@courts.je.
The closing date for applications (or secondment proposals) is Friday 5th May 2023.
