Legal Aid
All Jersey qualified lawyers swear an oath of office when entering the legal profession to represent people who may have difficulty representing themselves and who cannot afford to pay full legal fees to access legal advice.
Lawyers in Jersey are not paid by the States of Jersey to undertake Legal Aid work. The Legal Aid scheme is presently subsidised by the lawyers and law firms who undertake Legal Aid work. Legal Aid is only granted in certain circumstances.
Legal Aid in Jersey is administered by the Acting Batonnier, who may be contacted on 01534 613999 or via email@legalaid.je.
More information about the Legal Aid Scheme and whether you qualify for Legal Aid can be found on www.legalaid.je.
If the Acting Batonnier decides that you qualify for Legal Aid, you will be issued with a Legal Aid certificate showing the name of the lawyer or law firm who has been appointed to act for you.
