Draft Legislation

From time to time, the Law Society of Jersey will comment on draft legislation to ensure that the views of its Members are represented, after consultation.

This is one of the objectives of the the Law Society of Jersey, as set out in Article 8 of The Law Society of Jersey Law 2005:

To make representations, as appropriate, on any matter affecting –

  • the administration of the law, the judicial system or the legal profession,
  • civil rights or liberties or matters of public interest, or
  • the enactment of legislation or the review or reform of existing laws; and
  • To do everything that is reasonably incidental or conducive to the attainment of those objects.

Reviewing and commenting on draft legislation also ensures that the legal profession can properly interpret and understand draft laws and, if necessary, the the Law Society of Jersey will suggest helpful amendments to draft legislation on behalf of its Members.
